August 2015 Newsletter

In response to increased demand we have added another week 20-27 Feb 2016 to our winter 2015-16 schedule. This is now open for booking.

What a summer!

Don't know what it's been like in your part of the world but in Donegal it has been atrocious....pretty much since our return in May it has been wet, windy and so, so cold. We had to put the central heating back on in July which was a first!
Anyway surely August will be better and in any event not long now until our season opens in La Gomera where hopefully the weather will be somewhat kinder.

Feel like you need an escape before Christmas.... we still have a small number of places available in November 18-25 (4 x places) and December 9-16 (1 x place). See details of our schedule here.

Sterling remains very strong and we have a lot of UK customers taking advantage of the exchange rate to lock in their holidays now As of this morning our Popular Package would work out around £420 while our Premium Package  stands around £600! In previous years we offered customers the option of paying in £STG but this season due to the exchange volatility we can only accept €Euro. However if you have a £Stg bank account you can avail of current rate of exchange by paying for your holiday in total with credit or debit card in €. Your card issuer will make the exchange at current rates and your account will be billed in £Stg.

Good news for solo travellers:
We still have a very few places on our Premium Package for solo travellers..NO PREMIUM...
9-16 Dec 2015 1 x place left
9-16 Mar 2016  2 x places left

This means a saving of €105 for long-suffering solo travellers booking our Premium Package!

Irish Clients:
Since Ryanair changed their schedule out of Dublin and now have afternoon flights, the times don't work for our transfers as arrival is too late for the last ferry to La Gomera. Best way to travel now is Aer Lingus on a Tuesday afternoon arriving approx 18:30 PM and stay the night in San Miguel, Tenerife where we can arrange very nice accommodation at €70 per couple. We will then pick you up next morning to join the group for onward transfer to La Gomera. Going back you can book on Ryanair for Wednesday evening getting into Dublin around midnight. Right now the above combination of flights works out around under €200 return in February.

What's new....

On our Premium Package, based in the luxury 4-star Hotel Jardin Tecina, we haveswitched to B&B as standard for maximum flexibility and reduced our rate to €850 per person sharing. This allows you to go out for dinner to any of the lovely little local restaurants which are all reasonably good and relatively inexpensive (~ €20 - €25 including wine). However if you feel like a night in the hotel then you can purchase dinner in the buffet restaurant at the special price of €18.50 or indeed if you want to upgrade to half-board and eat in the hotel every night you can do so for an additional payment of €98 (just select this option our booking form).

Our Popular Package remains unchanged at €599 and we will continue to use the delightful self-catering apartments in Bellavista where you will be looked after by Elena and Liz who did such a great job for us last year.

Bookings have been very strong this year and we have already filled around 2/3 of our availability so please don't leave it to the last moment...if you're thinking of joining us this season contact us now to avoid disappointment.

July 2015 Newsletter

Bookings for our new season which opens on 18th November continue apace although we still have some availability for most weeks.

Good news for UK clients:
Many of our UK customers are  locking in their bookings right now to take advantage of the historically high £STG exchange rates arising from Euro uncertainty in the on-going Greek monetary crisis. As of this morning our Popular Package would work out around £430 while our Premium Package  is a little over £600!

Very good news for solo travellers:
The Hotel Jardin Tecina have agreed to drop their single occupancy premium (SOP) for three of our scheduled weeks...
9-16 Dec 2015
9-16 Mar 2016
30 Mar - 6 Apr 2016.
This means a saving of €105 for long-suffering solo travellers booking our Premium Package!

New Schedule for Season 2015-2016

Just posted our new schedule on the website and bookings are now open for winter 2015-2016.Gomera WalkingWe plan to start the season on 18th November 2015 and run through to 6th April 2016. Last year we booked every place we had available and regrettably had to disappoint several of our clients who left it late to book....so even though we've added some extra weeks going forward our advice still is book early so you can be sure of getting the week you want.

What's new....on our Premium Package, based in the luxury 4-star Hotel Jardin Tecina, we haveswitched to B&B as standard for maximum flexibility and reduced our rate to €850 per person sharing. This season we want to welcome new leaders Sean Mullan and Michael McGarrigle who will be joining our little team for some of the scheduled weeks to help preserve my poor old knees for a little longer and hopefully bring some new stories for our returning guests! We will also continue to offer our services to assist self-guided walkers and non-walkers who want help in arranging transfers, ferries and accommodation in La Gomera.

On a separate note for anyone who is interested in Walking Holidays in Ireland (off the beaten track...so to speak) in the summertime we are pleased to recommend two companies that we have developed close relationship with:-Sean Mullan whom we've talked about before (and works with us in La Gomera part-time) runs "Walking & Talking in Ireland" up in the wild Northwest of Donegal and the Antrim coast
and
Gerry Greensmyth of "Croagh Patrick Walking Tours" based in Westport. In business since 1992 Gerry is probably one of the most experienced walking guides in the country offering a combination of forest trails, mountain paths, coastal track on the Wild Atlantic Way and famine roads in Mayo and Connemara.

Hope everyone has a great summer and that your plans for next autumn/winter will include a trip to La Gomera. Please don't hesitate to contact me if we can help with any information.

April 2015 Newsletter

Last week our fifth season drew to a successful close...nobody lost and nobody injured! March saw something of an improvement to this winter's unusually cool, damp and windy weather and when we left on Tuesday the sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky and daytime temperatures in San Sebastian were climbing high into the mid twenties!

It has been our busiest season so far with every single available place taken up and once again having to disappoint quite a number of potential clients who left their booking until too late.

Planning for our new season is well advanced and we hope to publish our 2015-16 schedule shortly and looks like we will continue to base our holidays in Playa de Santiago with the option of self-catering accommodation (Popular package) or luxury 4 star Hotel Jardin Tecina (Premium Package). We introduced a modification to our Hotel package of 5 days half-board plus 2 days B&B which proved to be very popular allowing people two nights to eat out in the village restaurants. We intend continuing this in 2015-2016 and maybe even extend it to 4 HB + 3 BB.

We hope to be able to add a few weeks to our schedule for this coming season with help on the guiding from our good friend Sean Mullan and others in order to cope with the increase in demand. As soon as we are able to do it we'll put the new schedule up on our website and let you know by means of a short newsletter of the main features for 2015-16

More and more we find ourselves assisting people with holiday arrangements including accommodation (both on La Gomera & Tenerife), Ferry bookings, car hire and other transfers. We have gained a lot of experience over the last few years and are happy to help save our clients a few € where we can use our good relationship with the various providers whether or not you want to come walking with us. Please recommend us to your friends and when considering a holiday in la Gomera let us give you a quote.

Best Wishes & hope you have a good summer wherever you might be.

March 2015 Newsletter

Can't believe it's March already and in  just four weeks time another season (our fifth) will be at an end! It has been our busiest season so far with every single available place taken up and once again having to disappoint quite a number of potential clients who left their booking until too late.

All this despite the weather which has been unusually windy, cool and damp. Local Gomerans say they don't remember a winter as cold and we see them well wrapped up in fur coats, jeans and boots talking "mucho frio" to one another! Everything's relative and we still manage to get about in shorts (the temperature hasn't actually dropped much below 15 Deg C) Our experience at this stage has enabled us to find the best weather for our groups although generally this means walking at lower altitudes than usual.

This year we worked in close collaboration with another Irish Company Walk & Talk run by our good friend Sean Mullan and based in our home county of Donegal. This collaboration allowed us to add an extra week to our schedule with Sean & partner Gudrun leading while we organized the logistics. This is an arrangement we are actively looking at expanding so we can offer more holiday dates using other guide/leaders so if you think you might be interested in working with us... please get in touch.

This is the time of year we start to look at plans for a new season which we expect to firm up by end April. It looks like we will continue to base our holidays in Playa de Santiago with the option of self-catering accommodation (Popular package) or luxury 4 star Hotel Jardin Tecina (Premium Package). We introduced a modification to our Hotel package of 5 days half-board plus 2 days B&B which proved to be very popular allowing people two nights to eat out in the village restaurants. We intend continuing this in 2015-2016 and maybe even extend it to 4 HB + 3 BB.

Since we started Gomera Walking five years ago we see a lot of changes for the better with the Island's government increasing investment in bringing old paths back into use, maintenance of existing paths  and very much improved signage as they start to realize the value and potential of walking to the local tourist economy.

Best Wishes
